Bob and Ray For the Truly Desperate

BNRToast

The shows presented here are digitized from the home recorded tapes of dedicated Bob and Ray fans. Some were produced by a person rushing to the radio, pushing the record button and holding a mike near the speaker. Others were taped fully at the time and rerecorded to edit out commercials and such later. One collector used a timer set-up and a direct connection to his tape machine. Fortunately the radio was usually tuned properly when the timer went off. These tape reels were collected and tr...

At this point in their career Bob and Ray's genius comedy  had almost left the planet.Enjoy some brownies with them, attend a radio soap opera writers meeting and then read a TV channels schedule for the day. Consider that most of their bits at this time were adlibbed. This short 1958 WNBC radio air-check is from one of R2's ARFS transcription disks which was taped to 7" reel to reel and then converted to digital format. The recordings low quality, fuzz, skips and abrupt editing makes it...

From a tape found behind the furnace while looking for ornaments and donated by B2, this is Monday, December 17, 1973. The Station I.D.'s, commercials and background Christmas weather chatter make this a pleasant episode.  There are a few wolf-hound howls during "The Gathering Dust" that may be from a station promotion. If you know otherwise, please correct the record.  The Mary Backstayge feature has the family discussing their Christmas of the past.  If you have a chance, please...

Bob and Ray Segments from Box X3 White Box tape X3 is an unknown collectors tape reel. There are several shows and bits of Bob and Ray on it. Those shows are from the late 1959 - 1961 CBS NBC period. Based on the hiss and whistles in the raw digitized file this appears to be a third or fourth generation tape. Between the shows on the tape is a group of bits which I present here for those of you desperate enough to enjoy such things. I have included a scan image of the boxes notes for someone to...

This show is from Thursday June 21st, 1973. There is some patter between Bob and Ray, an In The Gathering Dust and then coverage of the Gran Prix. On the Mary Backstayge episode Carmine joins the crew, Captain Larsen hits his head several times with the resulting personality changes.    A very unusual show. The recording here is also slightly unusual as two separate people recorded this show with one being slower on the stop button. The worst bits of both are used here 0:00  A talk on...

Hidden at the end of Shamrock tape number 37 – 6 right before the leader is a fascinating piece of Bob and Ray history. A note with this tape indicates the date is May 31, 1956. The theme music is “Bob Bob Bob and Ray Ray Ray” by Leona Anderson. The dialog seems to suggest this is a new incarnation of the show and may be the first episode. During the bits Leona herself makes a quiet and short appearance. I have teased out what I can of Leona’s improvised conversation. This recording...

Several bits of tape went into recreating this episode. If not for B2's careful cataloging it would have been impossible to place the Backstayges correctly. 0:00  Kent Lyle Birdley (Bob) introduces Bob and Ray. 1:15  Bob interviews Dr. Elmer Stapley, The Word Wizard (Ray), who educates the listeners on English usage and etymology, despite his complete lack of knowledge or insight on the subject. 5:15  Wally Ballou (Bob), running for mayor of New York City, talks about campaigning earlier in...

This recording contains portions of the Bob and Ray Radio show on WOR New York. The recording exhibits an under layer of another radio show due to misaligned erase and recording heads. There is also evidence of badly needed degaussing of the original equipment. The editing was done "on the fly" by pushing the record button while the radio played. Many of the clips are missing the beginning or ending of the bits due to this process. My heartfelt thanks go to whoever recorded this tape....

This recording has some patter between Bob and Ray. A seldom heard episode of "Mary Backstayge in A Tale of Two Cities" is already into act one. The taper had a slow hand on the stop button which allows us small bits of traffic and commercials. The 30 minute tape slowly deteriorates and tape crackles become frequent. The truly desperate will grasp this straw with a smile. Code pjshsf

Leaving New York on the Hummingbird Express train to Seattle. Wednesday, 03/28/73  The TEAC Reel to Reel deck ran into a problem during the transcription of this tape. The tape tension motor speeds on the model A-4010S are controlled by internal resistor sliders. One of the slider contact points became loose and caused the let-out motor speed to fluctuate which resulted in intermittent voice distortion on the digitized file. Thus producing a file worthy of this venue.  There are three...

This episode has not yet been properly dated. Any information to help date the show is appreciated. Some hints from Harry Wilson; At 16:20, Bob and Ray mention that Helen Harkness had been in England to cover the coronation. The coronation of Queen Elizabeth took place on Tuesday June 2, 1953, so this episode would be after that date. According to The New York Times radio listings, the duo ended this program on WNBC (and, presumably, other NBC stations) in mid-September 1953, so this episode...

The Backstayge group try to catch a taxi in Rome. As close to un-listenable as a 40 year old tape can get. A small pile of oxide from the tape built up below the capstan as the tape was run.
